Gaithersburg resident Phillip Kwang Bon Uh, 78, and a woman only identified as his wife, were struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21 in the area of Muddy Branch Road and King James Way, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

Uh sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators say. His wife was transported to an area hospital for treatment of “serious injuries” according to a department spokesperson on Thursday, Dec. 22.

The initial investigation into the fatal pedestrian strike determined that the Uhs were crossing Muddy Branch Road west to east at King James Way when they were struck by the Hyundai, which was traveling south along the roadway.

Officials noted that the driver remained at the scene after striking them.

The crash led to a lengthy lane closure of Muddy Branch Road between West Diamond Avenue and West Deer Park Road as the department investigates the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators did not say what caused the fatal strike and no other details were released by the department as the Montgomery County Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.
